ABOUT
Uday

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Conversations, Collaborations, Resonance, and Rebirth.
Bring back the hype, “RADIO SAKAMOTO Uday”, presented by J-WAVE's RADIO SAKAMOTO, happening live in Shibuya.

With the aim of transforming Shibuya into an international hub for art and technological innovation, “DIG SHIBUYA” teams up with J-WAVE and Digital Garage to push the boundaries of music. Casting the ever-evolving district as a symbolic “Future City,” we tune in to the sounds reverberating through its streets—an ever-shifting spectrum of FUTURE SOUND.

For 20 years, Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) captivated listeners with his landmark program, RADIO SAKAMOTO. Inheriting and expanding his vision, we present the tribute event “RADIO SAKAMOTO - Uday,” the first step in a new dialogue with Sakamoto's spirit.

J-WAVE will curate the music and words born from this fresh context, broadcasting them from Shibuya—both on-site as a live experience and on the airwaves as a special radio show.

The essence of Tokyo's pop culture. Japan's pride and global icon: RYUICHI SAKAMOTO. The story he engraved continues—starting here, starting now.

PROFILE

Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto has lived many musical lives in his nearly 70 years. As a keyboardist and songwriter in Haruomi Hosono’s Yellow Magic Orchestra, he helped set the stage for synthpop. His solo experiments in fusing global genres and close studies of classical impressionism led to him scoring over 30 films in as many years, including Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor and The Sheltering Sky, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant. In the past 20 years alone, he’s written a multimedia opera, turned a glass building into an instrument, and travelled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow. That exploratory spirit runs through Sakamoto’s 2017 album, async, which paints an audio portrait of the passing of time informed by his recovery from throat cancer. “Music, work, and life all have a beginning and an ending,” said Sakamoto in early 2019. “What I want to make now is music freed from the constraints of time.”
