今朝は「故人」特に亡くなった著名人のデジタルコンテンツについてピックアップします。

1955年に交通事故で亡くなった俳優のジェームズ・ディーンをCGで甦らせる「Finding Jack」という映画が現在撮影中です。日本では去年の大晦日の紅白歌合戦で、美空ひばりさんをAIで再現するという試みが放送されて、賛否両論を呼びました。

デジタルでいかようにも再現できるということは、いい面もあり、問題もまたはらんでいるといえそうです。

そのジェームズ・ディーンのデジタルコンテンツのエージェントつまり代理人であるWorldwide XR社のCEOであり創設者、Travis Cloyd（トラヴィス・クロイド）さんに、故人のデジタルコンテンツの代理人の仕事、そして故人を映画に起用することについてお話しを伺います。

JK ：クロイドさん、今日はお時間有難うございます。 まず始めに、会社のことを教えてください。故人のデジタルコンテンツを扱う初めてのエージェントだとか？

Mr. Cloyd, thank you very much for joining us this morning.To begin with, we'd like to know a little bit about your company. I understand that your company is one of the first companies to deal with digital human representation of the deceased?

TC ：そうです。故人の知的所有権（IP）を40年間マネジメントしているCMG Worldwideという会社が弊社の戦略パートナーでもあり出資者なのですが、その会社と協力し、故人のみならず生存している、さらには歴史上の著名人のデジタルコンテンツのエージェントです。

That is correct CMG Worldwide, a leading company with intellectual property management with experience of nearly 40 years, is our investor and our strategic partner. We work with them in representing digital contents of celebrities alive and deceased, and historical icons.

JK ：どういった種類のコンテンツのライセンスを扱っていますか？

Which content licenses do you manage?

TC ： 基本的にはデジタルとなりうるもの全てです。声、その人の言葉、肖像、画像、ビデオ等々です。

Basically everything that could become digital. Voice, words, likeness, images, video etc.

JK ： 何か利用に制限を設けていますか？たとえば政治的な発言などはマズイですよね。

Do you set any limitations in terms of usage? (i.e., limitation of usage for political purpose etc.)

TC ：コンテンツの用途に関してはとても厳密に管理しています。遺族の方々の承認を得るようにしていますし、意に反するようなコンテンツには使用しません。遺族がいらっしゃらない方々も、大体トラストや財団がありますのでそこと連絡を取り合います。以前に政治使用で連絡をもらったことはありますが、弊社としてはそのような利用の仕方は望ましいと思っていません。また、クライアントへの敬意を払い、必ずクオリティーの高いプロジェクトにしか参画しないようにしています。

We are very strict with how are contents are used. We make sure that everything is approved by the families, and we would never go against their wills. For those without a living family, there usually is a trust or a foundation. We have been approached for usage in a political scene, But that really wasn't what we wanted to pursue.Also, in respect for our clients, we only work with projects which we can seek highest quality of.

JK ：著作権が切れた後（一般的には死後70年）はどうなりますか？

What happens after copyright protection duration expires? (70years after death)

TC ： 商標保護の方が長いので、名前や肖像の商標を取り、更新し続けています。

Trademark protection is longer. We claim trademark protection for name and likeness, and keep renewing it.

JK ：ジェームズ・ディーン起用に関しては賛否両論があるようですが、どう思われますか？

What are your opinions regarding the controversy(pros and cons) of James Dean coming back on screen?

TC ： 色々な意見が出てくるのは理解出来ますし、新しい技術の利用方法で人々が快く思わないということもわかります。例えば、近年の「視線検出システム」だって怖いですよね。怖がるのは人間の自然な反応だと思います。しかし技術は今までそうであったように、進歩を続けますし、結局色々な非難も一過性のものだと思います。基本的には批判に我々の事業内容が左右されることはありません。実際にこれらの事業は特殊効果やVRの事業において多くの雇用を生んでいます。

I understand that there are a mix of opinions, and that people could be upset with how new technology can be used. For example, technologies like gaze-tracking can be scary to people, and it's a natural reaction. But technology will continue to advance as it has been until now, and all the criticism will be an afterthought. Critism doesn't really affect us. Not to mention, these technologies are actually creating dozens of jobs for people working with special effects and VR.

JK ：日本でのビジネスに興味はありますか？

Are you interested in business in Japan?

TC ：はい、ジェームズ・ディーンのような昔の俳優も日本では知られていると聞いていますし、日本での有能なCG／VRの会社とも仕事をしたいと思っています。

Yes, I understand that historic icons as James Dean is well known in Japan, plus, we are very keen to work with many talented CG/VR companies in Japan.
